Computers

My Computer We'll start off with a picture of my computers. The one on the left is an Athlon 700 with 384 megs of PC100 DRAM, a GeForce 256, and Sound Blaster Live, dual-booting Linux (by default) and Windows ME (for games). The one on the right is a K6 233 with 64 megs of RAM, a Savage4 with 32MB, and a generic Yamaha soundcard. It runs NT, for no particular reason. Off in the back is a Lexmark z32 inkjet, selected for their Linux support. The scanner is old and doesn't work in Linux, so it's hooked up to NT and largely ignored now that I have a digital camera.

In my professional life, I do a fair amount of system-level programming in Solaris. Sadly, there aren't nearly as many handy guides and HOWTOs for Solaris as there are for Linux, so I'm trying to fix that. I spent a couple of weeks trying to find useful information on sending custom SCSI commands to devices, and eventually tracked down the USCSI command interface for ioctl(). There wasn't much in the way of documentation, so I did a bit of trial-and-error. In order to save someone else the trouble in the future, here's a USCSI HOWTO.
